The European Organization for Nuclear Research, one of the world’s most prominent research centers, was founded in the 1950s to collaborate research into high-energy particle physics. Today, it is known as the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) and has its headquarters near Geneve, Switzerland. It presently houses the world’s highest-energy particle accelerator (the Large Hadron Collider) and examines matter at the tiniest distance scales accessible to any experiment.

The accelerators accelerate these minuscule matter particles to a fraction of the speed of light, and detectors operate like electronic eyes, making the particles visible and unraveling the fundamental rules of physics.

Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb), Toroidal LHC Apparatus (ATLAS), Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE), and Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) are the principal detectors employed. The discovery of the Higgs Boson, or the so-called ‘God Particle,’ which was expelled from a disruption in the Higgs Field, brought the international organization prominence.

CERN’s most significant innovation value is in extremes (extreme cold and extreme speed) since it contains the world’s largest and most energetic particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which was introduced colder than space in 2009. Its cryogenic systems chill over 1000 magnets on the LHC to near-absolute zero temperatures, where matter takes on unique characteristics. No particle physics laboratory of this scale has ever performed so well at such low temperatures.
